Oklahoma became the forty-sixth state on November 16, 1907, but its story began long before there was an Oklahoma Territory, an Indian Territory, or even a United States.
Native peoples lived throughout the region long before written records. Different communities hunted the plains, farmed river valleys, built towns, traded over great distances, and created cultures that left a lasting mark on the land.
One of the most remarkable places is Spiro Mounds in eastern Oklahoma. From about A.D. 850 to 1450, Spiro grew from a farming village into one of the most important Native cultural centers in what is now the United States. Twelve earthen mounds, ceremonial areas, and a large community developed there. Objects found at Spiro show connections with people living hundreds of miles away...
