By the time you reach the modern era, birth records feel straightforward. You search an index, order a certificate, attach it to your tree, and move on. In real research, modern systems still create plenty of confusion: privacy restrictions block access, jurisdictions do not match the family story, indexes hide key details, and late or amended records complicate what you think you found. The difference now is that there are more paths to the answer.
