Seasons of Connecticut: A Year-Round Celebration of the Nutmeg State

Roses displaying their first delicate blooms. Farmer’s markets and sailing regattas. Giant pumpkins in time for Halloween. A sleigh ride, white churches, and snowy woods. The four seasons are why many of us live in Connecticut and why others visit. In other parts of America, it may be warm or rainy all year, or snowy and cold for lengthy stretches. In Connecticut we take pleasure in four seasons that are distinctly different.

Seasons of Connecticut is a full-color, season-by-season celebration of the Nutmeg state by celebrated television and radio reporter Diane Smith, who has told the stories of the people and places of Connecticut for two decades. She presents more than sixty vignettes—inspiring, warm, funny, and sometimes downright strange—that will make you feel good about living in Connecticut, or make you want to visit. From a springtime kite-flying festival to country fair cook-offs in summer, and from fall wine tastings to UConn Huskies basketball in winter, the stories reveal the beauty and the personality of the state throughout the year...

Marriage Index: Connecticut, 1635-1860

Approximately 134,000 individuals who were married between 1635 and 1860 in select Connecticut towns.

Starting in 1650, registration of vital events (marriages, births, and deaths) was the responsibility of each town's clerk in Connecticut. Since a fine was charged for not recording an event, some town clerks maintained quite comprehensive records. While recording of vital events lagged from the Revolution to the mid-nineteenth century, recording in all towns improved by 1870 when the State Board of Health was created. This database includes information on marriages that occurred before the establishment of the State Board of Health and, thus, before a centralized repository was established.

Coat of Arms

Why did knights of the Middle Ages have coats of arms? What did the different symbols and colors mean? Could anyone have one? Even girls? Here's a fascinating first look at heraldry with an accompanying stencil so that readers can create a shield with their very own coat of arms... Read More

British and American Coats of Arms

Here you'll find crests, coats of arms, mottoes, and lineages referencing approximately 137,000 individuals. The information collected here ranges from illustrated compilations of coats of arms to definitions of terms used in heraldic research.

Before incorporating a coat of arms into your family history, it is important to note that sharing a surname does not necessarily mean that you share the right to a coat of arms. There is, for example, no such thing as a coat of arms for all people whose surname is Spencer. A coat of arms can only be granted to an individual and, as such, arms are associated with specific lineages rather than surnames. Similarly, many families with different names may share the same coat of arms. To claim a coat of arms as part of your family history, you must trace your lineage to the individual to whom the coat of arms was granted.

In order to discover whether an inherited right to arms exists, it is necessary to trace your male-line ancestry back as far as possible and then examine the official records of the heraldic authority concerned. For England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, the heraldic authority is the College of Arms and for Scotland the heraldic authority is the Lyon Office.

Notable British Family Histories, 1600s-1900s

This database is made up of eleven volumes containing detailed lineages of prominent British families (often with connections to the United States). This database references approximately 429,000 individuals.

Few names are as highly regarded in English genealogy as Burke's. Not only did the Burkes compile authoritative works on English genealogy, they also created a unique genealogical style, specifically, a method of laying out pedigrees in narrative form. Burke's pedigrees are easy to read, easy to follow, easy to understand. In general, each genealogical study begins with a brief biographical sketch followed by information about that person's lineage. Often, you'll learn details of education, service, occupation, honors, collateral families, places of birth, residence, death, and descriptions of arms. Also among the volumes is the single best reference work ever published on British heraldry, The General Armory of England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales, along with other volumes of equal quality and value...

American Source Records in England, 1600s-1800s

Span the Atlantic with this essential collection of English will abstracts, church records, and passenger lists. Largely comprised of English will summaries, this resource can tie your American ancestors to their English roots. You will find 141,000 individuals.

English source records can help you research an American settler's English legacy, closing the gap between generations and continents. Significantly, several volumes found here, as a group, make up a comprehensive resource for American wills proved in London from the early 1600s to the late 1700s. English wills can be an important genealogical resource tool, often providing names and locations of relatives, names of relatives who emigrated to the colonies, address information, and data about the deceased's life and characteristics. The facts provided by such records can help you establish family connections and determine the economic status of your ancestors...

The Six Wives of Henry VIII

The tempestuous, bloody, and splendid reign of Henry VIII of England (1509-1547) is one of the most fascinating in all history, not least for his marriage to six extraordinary women. In this accessible work of brilliant scholarship, Alison Weir draws on early biographies, letters, memoirs, account books, and diplomatic reports to bring these women to life. Catherine of Aragon emerges as a staunch though misguided woman of principle; Anne Boleyn, an ambitious adventuress with a penchant for vengeance; Jane Seymour, a strong-minded matriarch in the making; Anne of Cleves, a good-natured and innocent woman naively unaware of the court intrigues that determined her fate; Catherine Howard, an empty-headed wanton; and Catherine Parr, a warm-blooded bluestocking who survived King Henry to marry a fourth time... Passenger and Immigration Lists: New Orleans, 1820-1850

Passenger lists are important primary sources of arrival data for the vast majority of immigrants to the United States in the nineteenth century. Indexed and easy to search, this database includes extensive arrival information on approximately 258,000 individuals who arrived in New Orleans between 1820 and 1850. Partly in an effort to alleviate overcrowding of passenger ships, Congress enacted legislation (3 Stat. 489) on March 2, 1819 to regulate the transport of passengers in ships arriving from foreign ports. As a provision of this act, masters of such ships were required to submit a list of all passengers to the collector of customs in the district in which the ship arrived. The legislation also provided that the collector of customs submit quarterly passenger list reports to the Secretary of State, who was, in turn, required to submit the information to Congress. The information was then published in the form of Congressional documents. These passenger lists are important primary sources of arrival data for the vast majority of immigrants to the United States in the nineteenth century...

Scotland: A Concise History, Second Revised Edition

"The Scots," said a censorious English member of Parliament in 1607, "have not suffered above two kings to die in their beds these two hundred years." He may have exaggerated, but undeniably Scotland has a rough and bloodstained history.

It is a complex one too, but Sir Fitzroy Maclean disentangles the threads and enlivens his brisk account with both wit and scholarship. Pictures from authentic contemporary sources illuminate his story--its romantic figures and bloody battles, its politics and religion--and provide a rich visual record of Scotland's art, craftsmanship, and intellectual life. For this revised edition, the distinguished journalist Magnus Linklater (former editor of The Scotsman), explores the renewed strengths of Scottish identity as the country enters the new millennium with a new parliament. 250 b/w illustrations. 250 black-and-white illustrations... This Noble House: Jewish Descendants of King David in the Medieval Islamic East (Jewish Culture and Contexts)

This Noble House explores the preoccupation with biblical genealogy that emerged among Jews in the Islamic Near East between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries. Arnold Franklin looks to Jewish society's fascination with Davidic ancestry, examining the profusion of claims to the lineage that had already begun to appear by the year 1000, the attempts to chart the validity of such claims through elaborate genealogical lists, and the range of meanings that came to be ascribed to the House of David in this period. Jews and Muslims shared the perception that the Davidic line and the noble family of the Prophet Muhammad were counterparts to one another, but captivation with Davidic lineage was just one facet of a much broader Jewish concern with biblical ancestry.

Based on documentary material from the Cairo Geniza, the book argues that this "genealogical turn" should be understood as a consequence of Jewish society's dynamic encounter with its Arab-Islamic milieu and constituted a selective adaptation to the importance of ancestry in the dominant cultural environment. While Jewish society surely had genealogical materials and preoccupations of its own upon which to draw, the Arab-Islamic regard for tracing the lineage of Muhammad provided the impetus for deploying those traditions in new and unprecedented ways.

On the one hand, the increased focus on ancestry is an instance of medieval Jews reflexively and unselfconsciously making use of the cultural forms of their Muslim neighbors; on the other, it is an expression of cultural competitiveness or even resistance, an implicit response to the claim of Arab genealogical superiority that uses the very methods of the Arab "science of genealogy." To be sure, Franklin notes, Jews were only one of several non-Arab minority groups to take up genealogy in this way. At the broadest level, then,This Noble House illuminates a strategy that various minority populations utilized as they sought legitimacy within the medieval Arab-Islamic world... Read More

Remembering Christmas in Chicago

In Chicago, wherever Christmas is celebrated, holiday traditions reflect both universal themes and local color, both the spirit of giving and snow-covered State Street. In 1913, Chicago decorated its first civic Christmas tree, while many others arrived on the fabled “Christmas tree ships” of the era. Holiday shoppers crowded the sidewalks in front of stores such as Marshall Field & Company, Santa Claus held the rapt gaze of children, and churches and charities reached out to the needy. So Christmas was then, and so it has remained. With a selection of fine historic images from her best-selling book Historic Photos of Christmas in Chicago, Rosemary K. Adams provides a valuable and revealing historical retrospective on Chicago’s celebration of America’s most cherished tradition. Remembering Christmas in Chicago offers more than 125 images of the Christmas season in the Windy City, from festive outdoor celebrations to intimate family gatherings. Culled from the archives of the Chicago History Museum, these images depict the city through the years during its annual celebration of this very special holiday, and so provide a chance to look back in time while reflecting on the meaning of Christmas today... Thanksgiving Tales: True Stories of the Holiday in America

Not every Thanksgiving in America is a folk-art painting. They are as varied as Americans themselves, and run the spectrum of emotion and experience - from as rural as watching Grandma slaughter the holiday bird by the barn, to the traditional with family football games in the yard, and to the modern with multicultural meals complete with eggrolls. In Thanksgiving Tales: True Stories of the Holiday in America, 48 writers from across the United States share their individual stories and memories. But, whether held in a country farmhouse, amid the frantic pace of New York City, or in a restaurant, there are a number of common elements. It is a holiday for everyone - regardless of whether your family came here via the Mayflower, Ellis Island, international airport, or any other way. It is a holiday steeped in traditions (whether faithfully followed, radically ignored, or adapted to individual circumstances), memories and images. These stories reveal how seemingly simple things - like the passing of a tradition to the next generation, sitting next to Grandpa, favorite foods and recipes, or certain sounds, sights, and smells - can have special meaning and leave warm and indelible memories. Some of the stories describe the chaos and mishaps of meal preparation, family arguments and first-time hosts-all crises then, but now looked upon with laughter. Other stories recount family traditions, meaningful moments, memorable guests and hosts, remembering those no longer with us, being alone, or out-and-out hating the holiday. Thanksgiving Tales is a reflection of Americans, as much as it is a look at the holiday. It is a testament to the importance of the holiday that Americans will go to great lengths for Thanksgiving - spending money to travel long distances or taking days to prepare meals, sometimes only to find themselves seated next to the weird cousin or sick all night from bacteria-laden food. Yet, it's done all over again the next year...  Read More

City directories were also often published for smaller cities. That means that city directories could be quite important to your research. Bringing a wealth of new information to his subject, as well as his characteristic literary flair, Philbrick details the collision between two American icons- George Armstrong Custer and Sitting Bull-that both parties wished to avoid, and brilliantly explains how the battle that ensued has been shaped and reshaped by national myth...

The Day the American Revolution Began : 19 April 1775

At four in the morning on April 19, 1975, a line of British soldiers stared across the village green of Lexington, Massachusetts, at a crowd of seventy-seven American militiamen. A shot rang out, and the Redcoats replied with a devastating volley.
But the day that started so well for the king's troops would end in catastrophe: seventy-three British soldiers dead, two hundred wounded, and the survivors chased back into Boston by the angry colonists. Drawing on diaries, letters, official documents, and memoirs, William H. Hallahan vividly captures the drama of those tense twenty-four hours and shows how they decided the fate of two nations.
